Potting About in London: Fodder’s Guide to Clay Studios for All Levels

Pottery Class at Earthworks

At Fodder, we believe in the joy of using handmade wares to elevate our day-to-day, alongside the importance of supporting artists and makers. We’re always excited to share our maker’s stories and their journeys into making ceramics. Many of our talented potters came from different fields, some starting as textile designers, producers or even bakers.

For many of us, the allure of getting our hands deep down and dirty in the mud is a long-held ambition. Full of potential to express our repressed creativity and a much-needed digi detox thrown in for good measure.

If you’ve been thinking about dipping your digits into a pottery course, we think there’s no time like the present give it a try yourself. London is home to so many amazing studio spaces which offer everything from beginner-friendly courses to open-access memberships, ideal to take your practice to the next level once you are comfortable working by yourself.

Studios such as these are often a great and accessible way to build your confidence in making. Some of our makers still use them! They can be a great way to meet other potters and learn from each other, not to mention the unrivalled access to equipment it would take many years to collate in a private space.

We have put together a list of some of our fave London spaces below, but if you are keen to start working from the sanctuary of your own home, there are also some excellent books available that will guide you through the foundations – our very own Lilly Maetzig (AKA Mae Ceramics) has written two excellent books which are filled with practical tips and techniques – a great place to start with some air dried clay.

The list has a London focus as that’s where we are based and we get asked on the regs for local tips. But we would love to build out more spaces around the UK, so drop us a message if you have a top tip where you live and we will be sure to add it to our directory. Or if you are London based, and we haven’t included you in our short roundup let us know and we will add you in.
