A wider take on Fern Taylor’s handbuilt mug, with a bit more room in the hand and the same way of making behind it. Each one is built using nerikomi, a Japanese technique where coloured clays are layered and joined so the pattern runs right through the piece rather than being painted on the surface. Every mug is its own thing, and it’s finished with a transparent gloss glaze that brings out the colour and gives a soft shine.

Fern trained as a painter before she came to clay, and you can see it in how she puts colour and pattern together. Because the process is unpredictable, no two are ever quite alike, so you choose from the designs shown.

Fern Taylor is a ceramicist specialising in Nerikomi, a traditional Japanese technique that involves layering coloured clays to create intricate, patterned surfaces. Fern's practice is rooted in a celebration of colour, pattern, and composition—qualities that stem from her background in painting, which she studied at university before transitioning into ceramics. This shift from two-dimensional to three-dimensional making was initially driven by a desire to work more intuitively with material and form, using Nerikomi as a means to explore the intersection of pattern, repetition, and the unpredictability of process. Each piece is built slowly, allowing the organic patterns to take shape.
